The New Testament is commonly divided into five categories. Genre is the leading factor among how and why these books are organized this way, though narrative order also plays a factor in some situations such as Acts coming after the four Gospels – despite being written decades before the Gospel of John was written – because the events of Acts come after the events of the Gospels.
